How much does it cost to charge an electric car?

Drivers nowadays are becoming more aware of the multiple negative impacts of using fuel chemicals to run your vehicles. So, when the introduction of the Electric car came out on the market, it quickly grabbed all the attention of drivers for many different reasons. The concept of electric cars is a match made in heaven for eco-conscious drivers because it does not just protect our beloved earth, it also saves your wallets and purses as well as pockets from purchasing environmentally harmful fuel.

But helping the environment using E.V.s is not free. In fact, electric cars cost more than a regular fuel refill. Here are the things you should know about charging Electric vehicles and how much it costs.

How much to charge an electric car?

Before thinking of yourself riding on an eco-friendly vehicle circling on the street of the UK, you should probably think first about how much it costs to recharge an electric car.

Today, E.V.s are generated by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. That is the primary source of not just electric cars but so many devices to operate. The average price of E.V. batteries is around £5,000.

The price of charging your E.V. depends on whether you recharge it in your home or on public charging stations. The Department of Energy in the U.S says that most Level 2 E.V. charging (most common with public charging stations) costs around $1.00 per hour. Although not the UK, it would be similar.

When you think of public charging stations excessively charging too much, you can recharge your E.V. car batteries in your home. To calculate the cost, Find the electric bill you hid somewhere and identify how much kilowatt-hour (kWh) you currently pay. Then determine the size of your E.V.'s battery and do some calculations.

So, to calculate how much does it take to full tank your E.V. car is - Size of your battery (kWh) multiplied by the Electricity charge of your supplier (pence per kilowatt-hour).

Home Charging vs. Public Charging

Home Charging

Sometimes most E.V. drivers think that charging their car at a public charging station costs too much. It's understandable because why spend tons of money when you can do it yourself. It's practical, and it's more convenient.

It makes no difference what type of charging station you are using. KWh is still the basis of measuring the cost of charging your E.V. batteries. The end price depends on different factors. Different E.V. cars have different battery sizes, so you need to calculate how much the electricity cost your electronic cars add to your household bills.

For most cases in the UK, home charging will work out cheaper than public charging so we would recommend installing one in your own living quarters. Having said that, it's also recommended to check your local public charging station's price first to make sure that home charging does in fact work out cheaper.

Public Charging

Although charging in public stations costs more than charging your car at home, public charging stations provide more time-saving. And efficiency. Stations commonly use A.C. Type 2 charges. These types are suitable for general applications. They offer a simple plug-and-play solution to charge type 2 compatible vehicles.

Commonly public charging stations base the cost of your charging on how much time you spend. It basically means that your charging bill will depend on whether your E.V. charges faster or slower, but the rate still depends on the station. If you are lucky, some public charging stations offer a subscription fee to provide unlimited charging for their customers, or sometimes they offer a discounted rate.

Other Charging Stations

EVSE or electric supply equipment provides power to every Electronic Vehicle, and it's the counterpart of gasoline in fuel-based cars. Some E.V. manufacturers offer a free charging station. Still, if you want to invest in an E.V. charging station to provide more power and time efficiency to your car, here is the list of popular charging stations in the UK markets in 2022. Below shows a bundle of UK charging stations and their available locations.
